Buffalo's Hamlin Park neighborhood was flooded with concerns overnight, when a major water main broke all over several streets.
The debacle began at midnight, when a portion of Main Street in front of Canisius College was closed, along with the connecting streets. Rushing water closed the Delavan Avenue Metro Rail station and the nearby Subway restaurant, while some Canisius dorms went without water.
"We got an email about the water main breaking," said a student who lives in Dugan Hall. "I thought I'd go and check it out."
When the sun rose, the Delavan Metro Rail station was still closed and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority officials say it will remain closed until further notice. Trains are running from the University station to Humboldt and the Erie Canal Harbor Station to Utica. Eight Main Street buses are leaving the University Station inbound and Erie Canal Harbor Station outbound every 15 minutes.
Buffalo Police also tweeted out an alert. It said motorists should expect lane restrictions and delays in the area of Main Street and Jefferson Avenue for a few days. Buffalo Water said these kinds of breaks are usually repaired within 24 hours, but crews working on scene will know more about the extent of damage Thursday.
