Man still missing after Lake Ontario boat, air search

Aug 8, 2016

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its active search for a man who went missing in Lake Ontario Saturday night.

The Coast Guard is not releasing the man’s name or hometown. However, they say at approximately 7:15 p.m. Saturday, the man’s family alerted the Coast Guard and other emergency response agencies in the area that they could no longer see the man swimming in water. The man’s family stated they saw him struggling in the waves, but were unable to help him.

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo issued an urgent marine information broadcast to alert mariners in the area to look out for the man and assist if possible. Approximately 35 hours of on-scene time was spent by air and boat crews, including from Oswego; Detroit; Trenton, Ontario; and New York State, searching an area in excess 112 square nautical miles without success.
