MusicalFare Theatre expanding, adding cabaret space

Apr 2, 2013

MusicalFare Theatre has announced plans for an expansion of its space on the Daemen College Campus in Amherst.

MusicalFare Executive Director Randall Kramer says the plans include an expansion of the theater's lounge area, which will also serve as a 75-seat cabaret performance space.

"It's really a two-fold expansion and two-fold new earned revenue for us: the revenue we'll gain from the lounge itself from performances on the main stage and then also these cabaret performances that we'll be adding in that space when the main stage is dark," Kramer said.

Kramer says the theater needs to draw 4,000 to 5,000 patrons for performances on the main stage in order to be successful. The smaller scale of the cabaret space, he says, opens up new possibilities in terms of programming.

"It's a different type of performance," Kramer told WBFO News. "The scale is much lower, which allows us much more flexibility in what we program."

So far, the theater has raised $325,000 for the $900,000 project. Construction is slated to begin this fall with a completion of February 2014.
