A new type of face shield designed for frontline workers by a WNY company

A custom manufacturer of plastic products, in Chautauqua County, has joined the fight against COVID-19 by designing a new kind of face shield for frontline workers.

Until recently, Jamestown Plastics, in Brocton, was not in the business of making face shields. But when healthcare professionals started calling in late March, president Jay Baker says the company got out “a clean sheet of paper” to improve a design that’s basically been the same since about World War II. Baker says the brand new TrueHero Extreme Coverage Face Shield is made from a single sheet of medical grade clear plastic that wraps up over the forehead.

“We get superior protection because we're covering back to just in front of the ears. And we're also underneath the chin closing off — which on all these other designs is a wide open situation — which is not ideal if you happen to be bending over a patient and they cough up towards you,” Baker said.

They’re durable, he says, and can be easily cleaned for reuse.

“And the healthcare professionals that are using these are giving us rave reviews.”

And Baker says, Jamestown Plastics is getting inquiries about its new face shield from around the world. He says the company spent most of April working around the clock, seven days a week, to ramp up production and is now making 60,000 TrueHero’s a day.

“It’s been a huge team effort for our folks. We just have an amazing group of people here and we’re all in this together and we’re doing our best to get this product to people to protect them,” Baker said.
