Niagara County courthouse closed after receiving threatening letter

Hazmat crews were called to the Niagara County Courthouse at 175 Hawley Street in Lockport Monday afternoon, after a white powdery substance was discovered on an envelope delivered by the U.S. mail.

Three second-story court employees who were exposed to the powder were placed in quarantine and the courthouse was evacuated, then closed for the rest of the day.

The mail was sent from a state correctional facility to the second-story office. The three quarantined workers have since been released, for medical evaluation.

It was just a week ago that someone sent the Erie County District Attorney's office a bomb threat letter that included a white powder. DA John Flynn said that letter also was sent from a state prison.

A quick lab test discovered the powdery substance to be shaved soap.
