Noontime dispute ends in Lafayette Square stabbing

Oct 9, 2019

Early in the morning, a mother was arrested by Buffalo Police for stabbing herself and her 6-year-old son on the city's East Side. In the noon hour, a man was arrested for stabbing another at Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo.

Police said the downtown stabbing happened just after 12:15 p.m. near Main and Court streets.

They said two men, who knew each other, were involved in some type of dispute. It resulted in one man stabbing the other.

A suspect was apprehended a short time later with help from NFTA Police, but his name was not released.

The male victim, in his late 30s, was transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of "apparent non-life-threatening injuries."

That stabbing happened just hours after a mother and child in the city's Cold Springs neighborhood suffered stab wounds. The mother was taken into custody for the incident.

Buffalo Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo said a call came in to 911 just before 8 a.m. When police arrived to Purdy Street, near Jefferson Avenue, they found a 6-year-old boy had suffered "multiple lacerations" to his body.

The boy was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital for treatment, but Rinaldo said the injuries appeared "non-life threatening."

He said the mother appeared to have self-inflicted stab wounds and was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment under police guard.
