New Yorkers have been receiving calls from people posing as members of the New York State Police. The individuals tell people their identity has been stolen or that they are being investigated. This is an attempt to phish for personal information or collect money.

State police say the number on caller I.D shows up as the number for State Police in Ray Brook near Lake Placid, however the call is not coming from that location. The number displays as 518-897-2000.

State Troopers say they do not solicit donations from the general public.
