Pope recognizes local college president

May 15, 2016

The president of St. Bonaventure University was recognized by Pope Francis yesterday.

Sister Margaret Carney was awarded the Pope's distinguished service medal. The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice was created by Leo XIII in 1888. The award was a surprise for Carney, and it was presented by Father Greg Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of Angels Roman Catholic Church in Olean, during the university's Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday. The honor is the highest recognition that the Pope can award for non-ordained members of the church or laity.

Bishop Richard Malone nominated Carney after she announced in January that she would be leaving her post.
