A bill unveiled Tuesday by a local state senator would help veterans earn academic credit for coursework they completed as part of their military training.
The Veterans Education Through SUNY Credits Act would establish a system-wide policy for the state university system. Some state schools do offer such credit, but Senator Tim Kennedy's bill would
expand the policy to all SUNY schools.
"By giving credit where credit is due, New York State and its public university system can accelerate veterans' transition into and increase their marketability in the competitive labor force," Kennedy told WBFO News.
Kennedy announced the bill while attending a veterans forum and services fair at Villa Maria College in Buffalo.
At least 25 other states have approved such policies in their university systems, according to the Buffalo Democrat. Kennedy says he doesn't want to see New York fall behind in supporting veterans who are making the transition to civilian life.
