Rabies reported in Western New York

The region's first case of rabies for the year has been reported.

The Niagara County Health Department has announced the discovery of an infected raccoon in the Town of Hartland. The raccoon was killed by a pair of dogs.

Authorities suggest that to avoid possible rabies infection, wild or stray animals should not be purposely attracted to your yard or home. All pets should be current with vaccinations, and  children should be instructed to report animal bites immediately.

Also any pet that has been in a fight with another animal should be handled with gloves until tested.
