In addition to Wednesday night’s Buffalo School Board meeting marking interim School Superintendent Donald Ogilvie’s departure, another member of the board finished out a term.

Student Representative Bicana Brown graduates from Leonardo da Vinci High School on Thursday. She’s off to Canisius College in the fall to major in Political Science.

Brown said her year with the board has been a great experience, and that includes working with the often tumultuous school board members. She said their frequent and repetitive arguments aren’t bound to make a lot of progress.

“For the most part they are trying to work with each other now,” said Brown “It is the end of the school year and hopefully that will change next year where they will be working with each other completely.”

Brown said she feels that she has accomplished a lot, primarily in regards to student involvement. When asked if the board had a productive year, her reaction was less than definitive.

“Yes, well, not really,” admitted Brown. “But from a student’s perspective I can say yes, that this upcoming school year will be a lot better.”

The upcoming year will see another da Vinci student representative, as soon-to-be senior Ameer Dunston takes over the role. Wednesday night’s meeting was his first with a full crowd. Dunston says his biggest challenge will be ensuring recognition for the rights of students.
