Whether it be by plane, train or automobile, Americans are expected to travel this holiday season at an all-time high.

The AAA estimates 35 million people will take car trips throughout the United States this Labor Day holiday weekend, including thousands of Western New Yorkers. The Erie County Sheriff, meanwhile, is detailing how his deputies will help look for drunk, impaired and distracted drivers.

The figures are jolting. Teen drivers were involved in nearly 14,000 fatal crashes over the past years, according to figures released by AAA. About 30% of these tragedies involved speeding.

As we head into the summer months, the AAA warns that we also head into the "100 Deadliest Days," when auto crashes involving teen drivers increase. A follow-up study just released by the AAA Foundation reveals a disturbing trend: texting and social media use while driving is on the rise among teens.

Holiday weekend travel volume to hit 11-year high

If you're planning a trip over the long holiday weekend, you're in good company. More than 38 million Americans are expected to travel over the Memorial Day break, the holiday's second-highest travel volume on record.


The Griswold family of "National Lampoon's Vacation" fame would be proud. A recent AAA survey indicates that more than one-third of all Americans are planning a family vacation over the next 12 months.

The costs of owning and operating a vehicle in the U.S. has dropped to a six-year low, according to a new study released by AAA.


Some folks are probably yawning a bit more in recent days and struggling to adjust to a change in routine.

Snow-covered vehicles could fuel a new revenue stream for Albany. Under proposed legislation, motorists could be fined for not cleaning snow off their vehicles.

A newly-released report by a Washington DC-based research group suggests poor road and bridge conditions and traffic congestion make a significant financial impact on Buffalo-area drivers. That report was used as part of a call to Albany to provide increased - and more fair - funding for road repairs statewide.
