Buffalo-based U.S. Coast Guardsmen are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in learning how to respond to acts of terrorism.

Preventing and responding to violence at schools was the theme of the University at Buffalo's 13th annual Safe Schools seminar. About 1,000 school educators, counselors and law enforcement gathered at UB's Center for the Arts Wednesday. The Frontier Central School District in Hamburg is stepping up its emergency plans. It will be holding an 'active shooter drill' this spring. WBFO's Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley says the schools superintendent wants to make sure his district is prepared for major emergencies.

An active shooter field training exercise will be held Sunday, July 12 at Eastern Hills Mall from 6p to 10pm.

Members of the local law enforcement community are undergoing special training so they can better respond to shootings.  Recent exercises at the Erie County Fairgrounds were led by a team from the Department of Homeland Security.
