New York lawmakers have a new proposal for statewide regulations for home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb.

Airbnb has about 60,000 hosts in New York. According to an internal survey from the company, five percent of them are made up of federal employees. With the government shutdown going on four weeks, Airbnb is announcing a new program that will help give extra cash to furloughed workers or ones without pay.


Taxes for Airbnb hosts haven’t been the clearest in the past. A new agreement between the hospitality service and Allegany County should now make it easier. On top of that, rural areas are seeing an increase in Airbnb usage.


New data shows Buffalo Airbnb hosts have handled 29,000 guest arrivals since Memorial Day this year, leading to $2.5 million in total earnings according to Airbnb.

Airbnb hosts from across the state gathered in Albany this morning to rally for new legislation that would benefit home sharers.

It came with a price tag approaching $1 million. A 6,000 square-foot mansion on Summer Street was purchased and will be rented through Airbnb. DeChantell and Jessica Marinelli of Buffalo Rising say the investment is more proof of the continued growth and potential of the Buffalo tourism industry.
