Albany Legislative Session

The 2019 legislative session was among the most productive in several years, with the passage of bills that ranged from strengthening abortion rights, to allowing undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses If you’re a liberal democrat, there’s a lot to like. But conservative republicans are not as pleased. 


Legislative leaders have announced an agreement in principle on nine bills that they say will extend and strengthen New York City’s rent laws. It’s part of an effort to get a number of bills passed before adjournment later in June.

Progressive groups, including the New York Civil Liberties Union, say they’re frustrated that action on left-leaning issues has stalled in New York in the final weeks of the legislative session.

The New York State Senate is experiencing its worst gridlock in nine years, with the two major factions tied at 31 members each. No legislation is moving through the chamber, but there’s lots of finger-pointing.

The New York legislative session is due to end in three weeks, but some state lawmakers are talking about leaving a week early because they believe they will accomplish so little in that time.

The legislature is approaching its final week of the 2017 session, and agreements on outstanding issues, including mayoral control over the state’s largest school system, remain elusive.


State lawmakers are due back at the Capitol Monday, following a two-week break  after they passed a budget that contained numerous other items, like free public college tuition for some middle class students and an expansion of ride hailing services. Here’s a look at what, if anything, lawmakers still need to do before adjourning in June.

Lawmakers wrapped up the 2016 legislative session at around 5 a.m. Saturday morning, agreeing to take steps to cancel the pensions of convicted lawmakers in the future, legalize daily fantasy sports and extend New York City’s mayoral control law for another year.

Albany lawmakers worked through the overnight hours into Saturday morning, settling a number of measures at the end of the legislative session. State Senator Patrick Gallivan ( R, C, IP ) of the 59th Senate District said some items were still overlooked.

Ridesharing across Upstate New York has been halted since companies like Lyft were found to be out of compliance with state regulations last summer. However, new legislation in Albany could provide a comeback, which supporters say would be a benefit to the Western New York Community.
