It took only minutes Thursday for downtown Buffalo's brand new Market Arcade Cinema to have that eternal sign of a movie theater: the odor and sound of fresh popcorn, as customers arrived for the first day of shows.

The developer looking to reopen the Market Arcade Cinemas is scheduled to meet the Buffalo Preservation Board Thursday, with the hope of gaining approval to install exterior signage and move the project closer to a planned summer completion and opening.

A plan to bring a national movie theater chain to downtown Buffalo has cleared a major hurdle.

An eight-screen AMC movie theater is coming to the Market Arcade building in downtown Buffalo. Mayor Byron Brown on Thursday announced the city has selected Benchmark to redevelop the Market Arcade Cinema Complex.
