We’re not entirely sure how the Buffalo chicken wing was invented, but there are some good tales, and they tend to revolve around what happened one night in 1964 at the Anchor Bar, Frank and Teressa Bellissimo’s restaurant and jazz club on Main Street. However wings were invented, their fame spread so far and fast that by 1980 The New Yorker magazine had dispatched to Buffalo its venerable reporter at-large, Calvin Trillin, to unravel the mystery.

The Buffalo Police Department and Acting Erie County District Attorney announced Monday that a suspect in a brazen shooting death inside one of Buffalo's most iconic restaurants is now charged with second degree murder. The alleged killer, investigators revealed, is already in custody on an unrelated charge.

Though no charges have been filed, it appears the main suspect in last Friday's fatal shooting at the Anchor Bar may be in custody.

Buffalo police officials would only say Tuesday that the investigation into the Anchor Bar shooting case continues. But city leaders are also assuring the public that the iconic eatery, best known as the birthplace of hot chicken wings, remains a safe place to visit.
