The shape of the future for a major section of the Town of Amherst will start becoming clear today, as Supervisor Brian Kulpa talks with developer Nick Sinatra. Yesterday, a group led by Sinatra agreed to pay just over $24 million for the Boulevard Mall in an extended auction.

A local developer has won the bidding war for the faltering Boulevard Mall.

As more consumers shop online, brick-and-mortar retail outlets are struggling. That impact is being felt at the Boulevard Mall, which has been looking for a new owner to help it move forward. As Jim Fink of Business First points out during his monthly appearance on WBFO's Press Pass, the receivers controlling the mall are now searching online for that new owner.

As the Boulevard Mall continues to depreciate in value, Amherst officials are pitching the location to prospective buyers and will put the property on the auction block this spring. Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa acknowledges the property faces challenges, but he also sees possibilities for  Amherst as the town moves into the future.

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport scored a victory when Frontier Airlines decided to provide service there. According to Jim Fink of Business First, the discount air carrier was also being pursued by airports in Rochester and Syracuse. Fink says Frontier will fill an area need when it begins flying from Buffalo to Denver.

WS Development

Across the country, stores are closing and entire shopping malls are being shuttered. In Amherst, a major developer is planning to spend tens of millions of dollars to turn Northtown Plaza into a lifestyle mall. Some town officials see that as a vote of confidence in Amherst as a place to do business.

A section of the law also works to make sure places are accessible.  But one local woman brought her story to WBFO's Eileen Buckley, describing her life filled with 'inaccessibility'.
