The Erie County Legislature agreed to put up the $5 million promised to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery by County Executive Mark Poloncarz, but it was along fight.

Joined by New York State Senator Timothy Kennedy Wednesday at the Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, leaders of several science and nature education centers warned that their ability to fully serve the public - and remain important contributors to the local economy - may be in jeopardy if they lose state funding as a part of Albany's multi-billion dollar budget crisis.

Visitors to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens may notice a few missing items outside the vintage greenhouse and dome. Several trees have been cut down. But more are coming in their place.

The Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens in South Park is one of the area's most visible environmental and historical sites. It received a stamp of approval last week when garden writers from across the country visited during their annual meeting here. However, the cultural center is facing serious long-term sustainability challenges.

The real estate market in the Buffalo Niagara region is red hot. The March issue of Buffalo Spree explores both residential and commercial real estate in Western New York. Editor Elizabeth Licata says the region experienced little impact from the bursting of the housing bubble in 2008. She tells WBFO's Mark Scott in this week's Press Pass it was that stability which is contributing to the hot market now.

A project more than a year in the making will be officially opened to the public over the holiday weekend at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. A restored greenhouse space within the complex is home to a new aquatic garden and Asian garden.

The award-winning architect of the Darwin Martin House visitor center is taking on another piece of valuable Buffalo property.

Heavy snow caused damage in greenhouses behind the main dome of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. The snow shattered 150 glass panes in the back greenhouses. Plywood is temporarily in place to provide cover until the glass can be replaced.

Morty the Corpse Flower has bloomed. The rare flower that smells like rotting flesh or hot garbage is on display at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Friday.
