Trailblazing Women

There is a memorial on the waterfront for Flight 3407 victim Alison des Forges, perhaps the only public monument to a woman other than in a local cemetery. A local group plans to change that and has three candidates for new statues of women.

Western New York Maritime Charter School wants to build a high school and gym complex on Buffum Street in South Buffalo, partially on what was once a Seneca Nation cemetery. Archeologists hired to investigate are close to finishing the first phase of their study.

Development projects in Buffalo have become increasingly noisy as they move through the city review process. On almost every project there is a group of opponents who point out the many Green Code exemptions being approved to allow a project to move forward. A charter school expansion in South Buffalo is now facing those complaints, plus concerns over a Native American burial ground.
