The New York State Education Department is awarding $34 million in state aid to more than 230 public libraries statewide in need of various capital upgrades. State Assemblyman Sean Ryan joined representatives of several local branches to reveal what's coming to local recipients.

New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan and the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library are calling on New York State to reverse course on proposed cuts totaling $25 million in funding for public libraries.

Albany is sending the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System some additional aid. At the Central Library, in Buffalo, Thursday, Senator Chris Jacobs said, that he's secured $120,000 in education funding for branches in his district.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library has a new high-tech bookmobile. The old one was scrapped just over ten years ago during the County's fiscal crisis.

This month, the Niagara Falls Public Library System is offering people with outstanding overdue fines an opportunity to reduce what they owe by supporting a local charitable cause.

Buried in the $140 billion state budget is a relatively tiny line item for $14 million for capital construction aid for local libraries. The funding is being put to use at libraries throughout the region.


Students help kick off bullying awareness month

A major anti-bullying effort continues for another season in Buffalo. The month-long 'Bullying Stops Here' campaign was kicked off Friday at the downtown Central Library. In this Focus on Education report, WBFO's Eileen Buckley reports on how city school students participated in the event.

The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library has launched its latest exhibit in the Rare Book Room and Ring of Knowledge. The Wonderful Wizardy of Baum features 14 first editions of the L. Frank Baum collection, including The Wizard of Oz.

Summer is always great time for children to stay on track by reading and last week, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System kicked off "Dig into Reading," the Library's Summer Reading initiative geared toward school-age children and their families. Programs are planned throughout the next couple of months across the area and later this week you are asked to "Hug your Library".
