Some Buffalo Public School students live in some of the most violent neighborhoods in the city. Unfortunately students have become innocent victims of stray bullets targeted for others. WBFO Senior Reporter Eileen Buckley talks with Buffalo News education reporter Tiffany Lankes, who for months has been tracking city school children facing with this tragic issue.

Some Buffalo Public school students are learning how to produce their own radio music show and interview guests.  WBFO's Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley visited the RadioARTS program at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts where students were attending a summer camp program.

Buffalo students inspired by Selma film

About 140 Buffalo Public School students received a history lesson in civil rights outside their classrooms Thursday. WBFO's Focus on Education reporter Eileen Buckley says students from six city schools saw the movie Selma at the Regal Theater on Elmwood Avenue in North Buffalo.


City school students explore Hispanic legacy

The Buffalo Public School District continues to strive for cultural diversity. About 80 elementary students had a chance to explore Hispanic history during a trip to the Buffalo History Museum.

Some Buffalo Public School students are enhancing their writing skills.  They're attending the Just Buffalo Literary Writing Center.  WBFO'S Focus on Education reporter Eileen Buckley visited a recent after-school session to find out how some students are hungry to learn more about the written word.

As the Buffalo Public School District works to keep troubled teens in the classroom, an outside program is assisting.  Catholic Charities of Buffalo launched a new program last year called Project Jump Start.  In this Focus on Education report, WBFO'S Eileen Buckley had a chance to meet with a teenager with a juvenile record, who is now back on track with his school work and home life.

Absenteeism in Buffalo public schools has been an issue for years, with teachers saying they can't teach students who don't show. The school district says the rate is getting better with attendance on the rise.  But one city school teacher is releasing statistics on his missing students.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown kicked off his 13th annual Reading Rules! Kids Summer Reading Challenge  program Thursday. The program challenges city students to maintain and improve their reading during the summer months.
