Buffalo Public Schools declaring turnaround victory

The Buffalo Public School District is declaring victory in turning around past failing and struggling city schools. Buffalo Schools Superintendent Kriner Cash said city schools have been turned around.  WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley attended a celebration with the school community Thursday at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts.

Parents in Albany, Yonkers and New York City are suing Governor Cuomo's Division of Budget asking for the immediate release of receivership grants promised to nine struggling schools. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley says the lawsuit will affect three Buffalo Public Schools.

The Buffalo Teachers Federation and New York State United Teachers field a lawsuit in state Supreme Court in Albany Tuesday against the receivership law. In November, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia issued a ruling that Buffalo Schools Superintendent Kriner Cash has the power to impose changes at five persistently struggling schools without union approval. WBFO's Focus on Education reporter Eileen Buckley spoke with both unions about the legal battle.

The Buffalo Teachers Federation and New York State United Teachers didn't file court papers against Receivership as planned last week.  But union leaders say they are expecting to file sometime this week.  In our Press Pass conversation WBFO's Eileen Buckley and Buffalo News Education Reporter Tiffany Lankes discuss the objections to the receivership law for struggling city schools that by-passes the union's collective bargaining.

The South Park High School football team will be recognized by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown at Wednesday night's Board of Education meeting. The South Park Sparks won the state championship last Friday and made history as the first Buffalo Public School to win the title. WBFO's Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley says this is a major accomplishment for one of the district's persistently struggling schools under receivership.
