Blast of winter weather across the region

Snowfall was widespread across Western New York Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties until 6 p.m. Wednesday. A Winter Weather Advisory is posted for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties, also until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and city officials had a message to residents, as they provided an update on snow clearing efforts: thank you. Honoring winter parking rules, Brown said, was one of the factors that helped streets crews get main and secondary thoroughfares ready for the Friday morning commute, following about a foot of snow that fell in the Queen City overnight.

Less than 24 hours before the City of Buffalo was anticipating its first snow accumulation of December, Mayor Byron Brown declared the city's streets personnel ready not just for the forecasted weather but for the entire coming winter season.

The Buffalo Public School District canceled all after-school activities Wednesday, however, it is a slow ride home for some students. The District said First Student school buses are running late due to the snowy conditions.

Heavy Lake Effect snows pounds northtowns

A heavy Lake effect snow band that pounded areas north of Buffalo overnight.  Snow bands have shifted southward and will continue south through mid-morning Friday. WBFO News spoke with National Weather Service meteorologist Kirk Apffel who is monitoring the bands and snowfall rates.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for northern Erie and Genesee counties.  The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

City hauling snow to Central Terminal

The City of Buffalo's Department of Public Works and Streets has been removing the snow with high lifts in South Buffalo and placing it on dump trucks.  WBFO'S Eileen Buckley says tons of snow is being transported to the Central Terminal on the city's East Side.

Buffalo to get overdue snow blast!

It looks like the Buffalo Niagara region will finally get an overdue blast of winter weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Watch from late Thursday night through Friday afternoon for Erie, Niagara, Genesee and Wyoming counties.

It will be party sunny on Thursday with highs in the upper 30's and by the evening snow showers are expected to arrive.

 The snow could be heavy at times in the overnight hours with two to four inches of accumulation. Temperatures will be only in the upper 20's.
