The working poor: where do we go from here?

The issue of asset-limited, income-constrained, employed families doesn’t exist in a bubble. It affects the entire community. According to research done by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, communities with a large population of working poor may experience higher taxes, housing instability and a decline in economic growth.

Brenda McDuffie was not born in Buffalo, but she has spent her professional career making the city a better place to live. She retains no Brooklyn-born accent, but the public housing she grew up in remains her inspiration to tiredlessly help disadvantaged residents gain the diverse quality-of-life skills needed to provide for themselves and their families. McDuffie chairs the Erie County Industrial Development Agency, is a member of the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable and, this year, celebrates 20 years as President and CEO of the Buffalo Urban League.

In an effort to clear its name, the Buffalo Urban League is taking the Office of Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw to court. The Urban League contends that Mychajliw's December 9th report is "filled with factual errors - and does not follow accounting standards."

The Buffalo Urban League has filed a notice of claim against Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw over what the group calls "an improperly conducted and fatally flawed report" that has caused harm to the organization.

A recent audit revealed how the Buffalo Urban League overbilled Erie County's Department of Social Services. Charlotte Keith, who reported on the story for Investigative Post.org, discussed the findings on WBFO's Press Pass.
