For local hockey fans and parents, the opening weekend of HarborCenter was a big success.

Plans were announced Wednesday for the first Big 4 Basketball Classic on Saturday, November 29, at First Niagara Center. Planners may have scored with fans by designing special throwback uniforms that feature the colors of the Buffalo Braves.

With a record number of new students enrolled this semester at Buffalo State, some students are being housed at the Canisius College campus on Main Street. In this Focus on Education report, WBFO's Eileen Buckley says both schools are working to respond to complaints of poor dorm conditions.

One of the performers from the legendary 1960s folk group Peter, Paul and Mary will be in Buffalo this week. Noel "Paul" Stookey will hold a performance and lecture at 7 p.m. Friday at Canisius College in the Montante Cultural Center. WBFO's Eileen Buckley talked with Stookey about the famous trio, his songwriting and his activism.

A civil rights legend will appear in Buffalo Thursday to celebrate Black History month.  Reverend Dr. Cordy Tindell Vivian will be a guest of Canisius College and led students in a reenactment of the Freedom March to the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.  WBFO'S Eileen Buckley had a chance to speak with Rev. The new leader of the Roman Catholic Church is the first Jesuit Pope.

Mick Cochrane, a professor of English and director of creative writing at Canisius College, is a published author of short stories and four novels. His most recent,  Fitz, has just been published.

Pundit and analyst David Frum told an audience at Canisius College last night Republicans have to spend less time on social issues and more on economic issues which are damaging so many Americans.

The Toronto native says there have been years of downward economic pressure on most Americans and they don't like it and want change but Republicans aren't listening.

"The way you represent Americans who are under economic pressure is by taking seriously their economic interests and there are interests that are beyond simply the price of gas."
