More and more, paying road and bridge tolls is an electronic process, like those overhead collection wires near the Grand Island Bridge. So is the process when something goes wrong. The New York State Thruway Authority is now trying to resolve problems with people...real people.

For several years, many Amherst residents have wanted to move the Williamsville and Lackawanna toll barriers. One of the reasons is they want a toll reduction. The other reason is a buildup of cars.

The executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority says drivers should expect to see more cashless tolls throughout the state. Matthew Driscoll discussed the plans Wednesday on Grand Island where cashless tolls have been receiving mixed reviews from commuters.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said New Yorkers who use the state Thruway will have a bit of a wait before more cashless tolling is installed on the nearly 500-mile tolled portion of the road.

Though cashless tolls have yet to appear in Western New York, their possibilities are creating conversation among local officials. One elected leader believes the system could ease some of the long-term problems caused by the Williamsville toll booths.

Elected leaders from all levels of government are teaming up to push for more cashless tolling on the New York State Thruway. Just last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Grand Island Toll booths will be replaced with an electronic system next year.
