The success of Proposition Number One, the ballot amendment to expand casino gambling, and the failure of the last amendment, to allow judges to serve until age 80, are both wins for Governor Andrew Cuomo.
A State Supreme court judge heard arguments Friday on whether the State Board of Elections should change the wording of a casino gambling amendment that critics say improperly advocates for the measure’s passage.
Governor Cuomo says it’s now up to the voters to decide whether they want to expand gambling in New York State. He’s signed into law a plan build casinos upstate, but the public must approve a change in the state’s constitution in order for it to move forward.
A statewide referendum on whether to allow non-Indian casino gaming in New York may not be on the ballot this November. Governor Andrew Cuomo says this is not an ideal year for a public vote due to a lack of statewide political races that will bring voters to the polls.
