Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said citizens with a lot of time on their hands and a desire to commune with nature are concentrating too much on Chestnut Ridge Park and causing crowds that are not praciticing social distancing.

A fundraising campaign was announced Friday for the construction of the first all-inclusive playground within the Erie County park system. An informational session will be hosted Sunday afternoon at Chestnut Ridge Park, where the desired playground will be built.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz is pushing back against allegations his office has been mismanaging money borrowed for the Department of Parks. The Buffalo News released a report Wednesday detailing a lack of renovations to pavilions, roads and bathrooms within the parks system, most notably at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park.

Chestnut Ridge Park is a destination for hiking and tobogganing but although it is lush with flora and fauna, many Western New Yorkers may be surprised to learn the park doesn’t actually contain any chestnut trees.

Chestnut Ridge Park hosts Polish Kulig

The second annual Polish Kulig will be held Sunday at Chestnut Ridge in Orchard Park. The word Kulig means “sleigh ride,” and it’s what the old Polish nobility would describe as winter parties.

Erie County has a new Ranger Program aimed at improving safety and educational opportunities in county parks. While the program has been in the works for a while, it follows a number of accidents on the Eternal Flame Trail at Chestnut Ridge Park earlier this year, including one that took the life of a 14-year-old boy.

A hiker who slipped while walking a trail at Chestnut Ridge was airlifted via Mercy Flight to ECMC last night.

Erie County is increasing handicapped accessibility in some of its parks, not an easy task in woods and on trails.

A pair of teenagers who disappeared from a picnic at Chestnut Ridge Park have been found.

Carly Chew and Sharon DeCarlo, both 16 years old, were seen wandering away from an organized picnic on Friday afternoon. Concerns grew as hours passed, and a broad search was launched in the evening. The Erie County Sheriff's helicopter along with 50 officers were engaged in the search.

The girls were located during the overnight hours.

Sheriff's officials do not believe that foul play was involved.
