A Buffalo man faces multiple charges for allegedly intentionally driving his vehicle into the entrance of a Chippewa Street bar.

A busy portion of Chippewa Street was closed temporarily this morning when a manhole cover was blown into the air.

A day after the Buffalo Police Department ordered an end to overtime for special details patrolling Chippewa Street and elsewhere, a fight broke out early Sunday involving a man who fired a gun into the air over the entertainment district. He was arrested late Monday, but the president of the police union says ending the details was a major mistake.

Several Buffalo bar owners and local event promoters met in City Hall to discuss how they may protect their respective operations, and prevent problems such as violence during special events promoted by third parties at local establishments. Third-party promoters may soon be required to register with the city.

Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of harassment, disorderly conduct and trespassing in relation to a confrontation in a Chippewa Street bar in late June.

While investigation continues into a fight at The Lodge which led to a temporary mandated closure, the popular West Chippewa Street bar and grill re-opened on Tuesday under new restrictions.

A private sector group has been formed to preserve and advanced the Chippewa District in downtown Buffalo. The Chippewa Alliance is comprised of representatives from various local businesses, including Key Bank, Uniland Development, Delaware North Companies, Eric Mower + Associates, Evergreen Health Services, North American Breweries (Labatt), Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak LLP.
