Sail Buffalo Sailing School has been providing many Western New Yorkers the opportunity to take classes and get a certification in sailing since they came to a lease agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard in 2012. The program, located on the inner harbor, could be in danger if they do not extend the lease soon.

Public safety divers like the Buffalo Police underwater recovery unit are supposed to take their training slow. For example, experts say the norm in training how to dive in swift currents is to start in water that’s moving somewhere between one and four knots. But on the day Officer Craig Lehner trained in the Niagara River last October, the currents were eight to 12 knots.


Trump's Texas Visit Highlights Federal Response Effort

President Trump visited Texas on Tuesday to show support for residents reeling from the effects of Hurricane Harvey and to assess the first stages of the federal recovery effort.

The first woman to lead the Coast Guard district that covers the Great Lakes is retiring Wednesday. 

In the two years Rear Admiral June Ryan has been Commander of the 9th District, the winters have been mild.  And there hasn’t really been a need for ice-breaking – what she calls the Coast Guard Great Lakes' greatest challenge.

Coast Guard rescues seven in Buffalo

Crews from the Buffalo Coast Guard Station and the Erie County Sherriff's Office Marine Division were pressed into action Tuesday night when a vessel with seven people aboard struck a reef in Lake Erie at the mouth of the Niagara River.

The U.S. Coast Guard was called on to perform two rescues on local waterways over a 12-hour period Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Coast Guard followed Occupy Buffalo activities

Local Coast Guard officials were tasked with watching the activities of last winter's Occupy Buffalo protests.

According to The Buffalo News, attorneys for the protesters learned of the monitoring operations through documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request.

In response, Coast Guard officials say the monitoring took place to ensure there was no threat to the local port.

Coast Guard rescues three along Niagara River

U.S. Coast Guard officials say quick actions by the crew of a Buffalo-based rescue boat saved the lives of three people aboard a sinking vessel on the Niagara River.
 
Officials say the Coast Guard station on the Lake Erie waterfront received a call early Thursday afternoon from a woman who said her boat was sinking and she needed immediate assistance.

The woman was unable to give her exact location but said she had just floated under the Peace Bridge.
