The IRS Commissioner has until Wednesday to comply with a request to turn over President Trump's tax returns. The request was made by the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee - which Congressman Brian Higgins sits on. With more here's WBFO's Chris Caya.

Re-election came easy for Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins, who beat challenger Renee Zeno by 45 percentage points. With his party now in control of the House of Representatives, Higgins expects quick work on legislation addressing improvements to healthcare and major investment in the nation's infrastructure. As for Republican President Donald Trump, Higgins is calling for more Congressional oversight, but doesn't want his colleagues to become obsessed with investigations. He wants special counsel Robert Mueller to complete his investigation before deciding what should be done next.

The families of Flight 3407 are calling on Congress to reauthorize the flight safety standards passed in 2010. The “One Level of Safety” standards were put into effect a year after Continental Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center killing a total of 50 people.

Congressman Brian Higgins is calling on the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to investigate the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority. Higgins says the authority is grossly mismanaged.

Commuters frustrated with the detours around the Skyway have a sympathetic ear in Congressman Brian Higgins. Though the re-decking of the bridge has been underway for a few weeks, he remains unyielding in his criticism. For Higgins, the $30 million effort is "a compete waste of money because that bridge could not be constructed today because it's unsafe. It doesn't have shoulders in the event vehicles break down."

A new database is being tested that allows airlines to check a pilot's credentials before they're hired. It's required as part of the safety regulations enacted after the crash of Flight 3407, in Clarence Center, that killed 50-people.

That's the assessment of two local Democrats who joined with the representative of a local realtors' group to reject a proposal eliminating a tax deduction that's been in place for more than a century.

While the state Department of Transportation has an elaborate $36 million plan to renovate the Buffalo Skyway, Congressman Brian Higgins wants to shift direction.


Elected leaders from all levels of government are teaming up to push for more cashless tolling on the New York State Thruway. Just last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Grand Island Toll booths will be replaced with an electronic system next year.

Local drivers who travel the Skyway can expect delays, road closures and detours in the coming months. The New York State Department of Transportation is expecting to begin rehab work on the bridge over the Buffalo River in the coming months - and a public information meeting about the project is set for next week. But Congressman Brian Higgins is still calling for the Skyway's replacement.

Higgins criticizes inky discharge, seeks EPA probe
