Elected officials joined representatives of the Darwin Martin House to lift ceremonial shovels Wednesday in a groundbreaking that begins the final component of the $50 million restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed complex in Buffalo's Parkside neighborhood.

New York State is providing $3.7 million to the organization which has led an ongoing project to restore what was once the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed summer home of Darwin Martin and his family.

Officials gathered inside the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo Friday morning to unveil a new wisteria mosaic fireplace. The introduction of the fireplace marks the end of an ambitious $50 million restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed complex.

It's a chance for the neighborhood to show off its varied housing on the edge of Delaware Park, with much of that housing surrounding the landmark Darwin Martin House on Jewett Parkway.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s North Buffalo masterpiece has been used as an education site for thousands of visitors over the past decade. Now, the Darwin Martin House has a new Education Center in the restored basement.

When Frank Lloyd Wright designed the landmark Darwin D. Martin House in North Buffalo, he also designed the surrounding landscaping to maximize the effect of the combined building and vegetation. Most of it is gone, but not all.

After years of effort, there's increasing interest in the economic development results of cultural tourism.

Residents near the Darwin Martin House in North Buffalo or the Michigan Avenue Baptist Church on the edge of Downtown see the visitors to historic sites.

The commission studying the Michigan Avenue historic district is near time to deliver its recommendations on how to develop the neighborhood and the history surrounding it.


Several local sites designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright can now be seen on one day-long tour. 

The Darwin Martin House, Graycliff Estate, the Blue Sky Mausoleum and the Fontana Boat House are among the stops on the All Wright All Day tour announced today by Martin House Restoration Corporation Executive Director Mary Roberts.

"This will be one of the most fun-filled architectural educational tours that you can take," Roberts said.
