A Buffalo resident who grew up on Grand Island, Carima El-Behairy has announced her candidacy for the New York State Senate District 60 seat, currently held by Republican Chris Jacobs.

Change at the Erie County Water Authority is continuing, as Republicans now have to fill their remaining seat on the three-member board. County Legislature Minority Leader Joseph Lorigo says he wants that seat filled quickly.

Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra says he is dropping out of the Republican race for New York State governor and will run as an independent instead. 

The race for the 27th Congressional District continues to draw attention by both major parties.

Election Day 2017 has just finished, but Election Day 2018 is already heating up. Another candidate has announced for the Democratic nomination to run against Congressman Chris Collins.

A transgender woman has won a seat in Virginia's House of Delegates. Danica Roem defeated an incumbent who had sponsored a bill earlier this year that would have restricted which bathroom transgender people could use.

It's the first time someone who's said they were transgender has been elected to a state legislature.

Roem, a Democrat, decisively defeated Republican Del. Bob Marshall in a Northern Virginia district near Washington, D.C. Marshall had held the seat since 1992 and had been a prominent religious conservative in Virginia politics.
