Central New York’s emerging drone industry is taking some major steps forward, as construction of the infrastructure is complete for the unmanned traffic management drone corridor which runs from Syracuse to the Mohawk Valley.

Drones are more popular than ever before. The small remote-controlled aircraft can take photographs and shoot video and they are getting easier and easier to use.

However, drones are also more and more controversial. Critics say their buzzing propellers are an unwelcome intrusion in wild lands that are meant to feel remote and natural.

New York State is now trying to figure out when and where these tiny aircraft should be allowed on public lands.

A small group of protestors lined up outside the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Wednesday. They were speaking out against the use of drones by the U.S. military, flown overseas and used in attacks while operated from domestic sites including the local air base.

More than a dozen protestors rallied outside in a gated area across from Alumni Arena Thursday. Demonstrators were calling on the president to change his stance on a multitude of issues. The majority of protestors were there to urge the President to ban the controversial gas drilling practice known as hydrofracking.

There could be a new mission in the works for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

US Air Force officials have mentioned the possibility of locating a fleet of drones at the base. Details regarding the plan remain elusive, but the concept is getting support from Representative Kathy Hochul and Senator Charles Schumer.

It remains to be seen what this proposal could mean for the base's fleet of C-130 cargo planes and its staffing numbers.
