Officials report significant spike in drug overdoses

Local health and law enforcement officials say there has been a noticeable spike in heroin and opioid overdoses in the first quarter of this year.

A year-long investigation has resulted in the arrest of four people in Little Valley on drug and rape charges.

Authorities have broken up two large-scale drug distribution rings operating in Western New York.

Two separate drug trafficking rings in Western New York were dealt major blows Tuesday when sealed indictments were opened and 40 people were arrested.

Four University at Buffalo students have been arrested on felony drug charges in the city's University Heights neighborhood. 

Police seized more than a half-ounce cocaine, eight ounces of ecstasy and other pills, nine pounds of marijuana, along with $64,000 in cash Friday night.

Police Commissioner Derenda says an illegally parked car on West Northrup Place in the University District led to the arrests after the drugs were on display in plain view of officers.

Complaints and tips by city residents about drug dealing led to more than 60 arrests throughout the City of Buffalo this week.

Several law enforcement agencies from across the area teamed up with Buffalo Police in executing 103 search warrants in three days as part of Operation Power Sweep. Starting last Friday, it was the city's fourth series of drug raids this year.

A sentence has been handed down in the case of a deadly car crash that occurred in 2011.

Phillip Kane will serve a six month jail term and five years of probation for an accident that killed his fiancee, Elisa Mandella. Kane was found to have drugs in his system at the time of the accident.

A longer sentence could have resulted after a trial, but, citing the Corasanti case, the family wouldn't risk Kane's possible exoneration.

A Buffalo teen has lost his life in a Saturday shooting on Buffalo's West Side.

Police officers from Buffalo's "B" District responded to reports of a shooting at nearly two o'clock in the afternoon. The body of a 19 year old male was found at the corner of Massachusetts Street and Shields Avenue. He was transported to Buffalo General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives believe that drugs were involved in the incident and they continue to investigate.

The Canadian doctor who faced charges in the US of smuggling drugs and human growth hormone across the border has been cleared of charges up north.

Canadian authorities have issued a stay against Dr. Anthony Galea, the sports doctor known to have treated Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods and other high-profile athletes.

Galea was given a year of unsupervised release in US courts and faces no prison time.

Law enforcers say they've broken up a drug ring on Buffalo's East Side involving three generations of one family as well as close family friends.

Nine people have been indicted on various drug counts.  Facing the most counts is 58-year-old Theresa Anderson of Buffalo.  If convicted, she could face life in prison.  Investigators say she was the matriarch of this drug-dealing operation that first began small in 2000 and, over the next dozen years, acquired properties and expanded into a 24/7 operation.
