It is quietly being revealed that Sears will be closing its Eastern Hills Mall store after Christmas.

The company which has owned Eastern Hills Mall since 2003 now has its partner in place to begin a gradual transformation of the Clarence property into a mixed-use "town center." Amherst-based Uniland has become a co-owner of the property. The partners are reminding the public there's much more to do, though, before shovels go into the ground.

A tense situation in Clarence ended peacefully shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday.

Area retailers were met by throngs of eager shoppers on Black Friday.

Many stores and shopping locales opened especially early this year, some as early as Thanksgiving night. The earlier hours appeared to ease the rush of shoppers that have, in some instances, led to injuries in the past. And the bargains were the driving force in bringing out the dedicated, early shoppers.

The Eastern Hills Mall opened at midnight for Black Friday for the first time in its history. Marketing Manager Karen Garrow claims that the move was a success.
