The Center for Elder Law and Justice helps older adults navigate the legal side of elder abuse, like getting an order of protection or recovering stolen funds. Now the Buffalo nonprofit legal services agency will help elder abuse victims with their emotional, social and health needs, too.


It can be hard to quantify the problem of elder abuse. Experts believe that many cases go unreported. And Wednesday morning, their belief was confirmed by two new government studies.

The research, conducted and published by the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, finds that in many cases of abuse or neglect severe enough to require medical attention, the incidents have not been reported to enforcement agencies, though that's required by law.

With the 4th largest number of older adults in the country, New York State is expanding its statewide effort to stop elder abuse. The effort will be coordinated by a Rochester organization, with an additional $8.4 million in new state and federal funds.

More than one-quarter of serious cases of nursing home abuse are not reported to the police, according to an alert released Monday morning by the Office of Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services.

A local law designed to better protect nursing home residents passed unanimously in the Erie County Legislature on Thursday.

As a global campaign focuses attention on elder abuse, a local initiative is gearing up to spread joy to thousands of senior citizens across Western New York.

Only one in 24 cases of elder abuse are reported in New York State, according to the Council on Elder Abuse. June is World Elder Abuse Awareness month and, in New York, local and state officials are working to create a safer community for senior citizens by working to bring those who take advantage of the elderly to justice.

Two nursing home workers in Buffalo have been arrested and charged with neglecting an elderly resident.


The former Kaleida Health employees accused of neglecting a nursing home patient were arraigned in Buffalo City Court Friday.
