The region's economic health may turn in the coming months, but Jim Fink of Business First sees another strong year for business development in 2020. As some high-profile projects--Elmwood Crossing, the Forge--will continue to take shape, Fink expects more investment coming "into Buffalo neighborhoods." In his 2019 report looking at regional development, Fink calculated some $20 billion in large-scale projects in Western New York. He won't be surprised if that total is equaled or surpassed in the coming year.


The developers of the Elmwood Crossing renovation of the old Women and Children's Hospital and surrounding property were in front of the city Planning Board yesterday seeking permission to turn an old medical office building on Hodge into a day care center. The amount of affordable housing in Buffalo is continuing to creep upward. On Thursday, the city's Common Council revised its approval of a Planned Unit Development designation for the Elmwood Crossing project. The big change mandates that 20 percent of the several hundred rental apartments must be affordable.

Over vocal objections from some members of the audience, Buffalo's Common Council on Tuesday approved creating a Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the old Women and Children's Hospital site and adjacent areas, allowing developers Sinatra and Company and Ellicott Development to plan the entire complex as one, despite different properties and zoning categories.
