On the eve of Election Day, Buffalo News politics reporter Bob McCarthy says voters are seeing "really nasty ads" from both sides in the race for Erie County Executive between incumbent Mark Poloncarz and Lynne Dixon. McCarthy also weighs in on the bigger picture in the City of Buffalo and how a lack of competitive races could affect turnout. And which are the county legislature races to watch on Tuesday?

New construction projects in Erie County

State Senator Chris Jacobs, considered by many to be a formidable challenger in the race for Erie County Executive this fall, has withdrawn his name from consideration as a Republican contender.

It took only one seat for Republicans to lose control of the Erie County Legislature Tuesday night.

The 2018 budget proposed by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz cuts the county's property tax rate by one penny to $4.94 per $1,000 of assessed value.

Three top Erie County leaders put away their political hatchets and, instead, put together a package of major changes in the county charter.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has appointed former County Legislator Timothy Hogues as Commissioner of Senior Services. Hogues replaces Randy Hoak, who is now Associate State Director for AARP, which provides benefits to its over-50 members.

Poloncarz said Hogues will be an asset to Senior Services "because he has already been working extensively with community partners to expand the department's programs."

For the fourth year in a  row, Erie County ended the year with a budget surplus, according to County Executive Mark Poloncarz. He announced the county's $1.7 billion budget ended 2015 with a positive variance of more than $18 million and an increase in the county’s general fund of $7.64 million.

Democratic incumbent Mark Poloncarz cruised to victory Tuesday over his Republican challenger Ray Walter, earning a second four-year term as Erie County Executive.

Some hotly contested races are on the ballot today, including elections for Erie County executive and Niagara Falls mayor.
