The state Office of Mental Health estimates a third of those incarcerated in New York have some type of mental illness. So why are they locked up instead of in a mental health program? Actually, Erie County has become a leader in diverting these offenders from prison. Progress has been slow, but steady, using a national model of law enforcement called Crisis Intervention Teams.

Six people were arrested at an Orchard Park fundraiser for Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard Thursday evening.

A Cheektowaga man is being held without bail in the Erie County Holding Center, charged with the shooting death of his father.

A year after India Cummings died at Erie County Medical Center, protestors were at the door of the Erie County Holding Center protesting her death and demanding changes. The lawyer for her family says the cause of death after 17 days in the Holding Center are now clear.

The local lawyer representing the family of a man who died in the Erie County Holding Center is praising the work of the New York State Commission of Correction. The commission issued its final report in the 2012 death of 35-year-old Robert Metcalf, finding it a homicide caused by improper restraint used by Erie County deputies.

Protestors packed a conference room in the Central Library Downtown Thursday night to complain about the mysterious death of India Cummings after nearly three weeks in the Holding Center.

The mysterious death of India Cummings in the Erie County Holding Center became very clear to rush hour traffic Tuesday night. Nearly two dozen protestors walked up Court Street to Niagara Square tangling and then stalling traffic.

An inmate being held in the Erie County Holding Center in downtown Buffalo has died from injuries suffered in a fight with another inmate.  

19-year old Tyshawn Ball of Buffalo has been charged with second degree murder for the beating death of an inmate at Holding Center.   

Acting jail superintendent Thomas Diina said the fight between Ball and 49-year old Patrick Yale occurred in June.  Yale was treated at ECMC and died at the end of August.

A 54-year-old Williamsville man is in critical condition at Buffalo General Hospital after trying to commit suicide in the Erie County Holding Center Sunday afternoon.

The Erie County Sheriff's Department says Edward Berezowski was arrested Saturday evening after two violent altercations with personnel at a Best Buy store on Transit Road in Clarence. He was taken to the Erie County Holding Center, pending an appearance in Clarence Town Court.

A lawsuit over conditions at the Erie County Holding Center has been settled.

Linda Arthur was awarded $55,000 for her charges of mistreatment during her stay in the lock-up. Arthur was jailed over an unpaid parking ticket. Her suit claims that she was denied prescribed medications and her due process while being held in a crowded cell with limited amenities for 48 hours.

The lawsuit has helped pave the way for state mandated changes at the Holding Center.

The ticket that led to Arthur's troubles has been dismissed.

Why were three Erie County Holding Center inmates mistakenly released over the past few months?  Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard went before the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee Tuesday to try to explain. 

In the latest incident a couple of weeks ago, a suspected car thief, Paris Williams, was freed from the Holding Center when another man whose last name is also Williams should have been released.

 The Erie County Holding Center has a new way for making bail payments.  The County Sheriff's Office has implemented a cash bail payment system that can be accessed on-line or by phone.

Streamlining the payment process for families and inmates in posting bail has gone high-tech at the Holding Center.

"It opens another opportunity for someone to make bail," said Robert Koch , Superintendent of the Office of Jail Management Division for the Erie County Holding Center.
