The Erie County Legislature approved County Executive Mark Poloncarz’s proposed 2021 budget Thursday with some amendments from the Democratic majority caucus. WBFO’s Kyle Mackie reports on the partisan-line 7-4 vote.

The Erie County Department of Health has closed several bars and restaurants for allegedly not following COVID-19 regulations, and county lawmakers want to know if the shutdowns were justified.

A borrowing agreement involving Erie County and the Erie County Medical Center Corporation, one that would help the latter fund construction of a major capital project, fell short of approval in the Erie County Legislature. The County Executive says with no deal in place, the county faces a deficit that will result in cuts to other services.

Either a lot of people are suing Erie County or it's going to cost a lot of money to settle the outstanding lawsuits. That's one conclusion you could draw from Thurday's action by the County Legislature to add $1 million to the county's Risk Retention Fund.

When Erie County legislators met in their afternoon session Thursday, they received a nearly one-inch thick packet of papers. It included a notice from Chairman John Mills that the legislature has been using too much paper.

On this Memorial Day, the nation remembers those who sacrificed their lives in protecting our country.  It's also a time of year to honor law enforcement officers who put themselves in peril to save lives.  Several ceremonies doing so were held earlier this month.
