Religious freedom is so important, it is protected by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. However, a recent lawsuit demonstrates how law enforcement can legally breach that freedom.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard at times has said publicly he won’t enforce edicts from Albany he doesn’t agree with, like the SAFE Act gun control legislation and, more recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 10-person limit on Thanksgiving gatherings.

But to hear Steve Felano tell it, Howard hasn’t gone far enough.

Erie County’s Police Reform and Reinvention taskforce met for the sixth time since its formation in September. The 13 member group focused on the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, was formed as part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s executive order over the summer for law enforcement agencies to examine their policing practices.
