There wasn't much opposition Thursday evening to a proposed Erie County law that would further restrict smoking and vaping in vehicles and outdoor spaces.

There are words like "creepy," "egotistical," "troubling," "shady" and an "alarming" number of complaints when former Erie County Social Services Commissioner Al Dirschberger began to make changes in his department, but it was characterized as a "morale problem" and not discriminatory. That is among the findings by the law firm hired to investigate a claim of negligence against Erie County.

With five new plows added to Erie County's snow-removal fleet and access to 20,000 tons of salt, county officials believe they're ready for the winter season. In a morning interview with WBFO, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz encouraged the public to prepare as well.  He says residents should stock up with food and other necessities, including a 10-day supply of prescription drugs.

A Grand Island woman pleaded innocent Wednesday to murder and manslaughter charges in the September death of her boyfriend's two-year-old child.

Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns says he is ready for a full term, while Democratic challenger Angela Marinucci is not sure he actually won. Kearns' victory margin is about 5,600, but there are still 19,000 absentee ballots countywide.

The Erie County Water Authority has approved a budget for 2019 that includes a "modest" water rate increase and $41.3 million worth of system-wide infrastructure upgrades.

People who come to downtown Buffalo to apply to help with their heating bills are used to long lines that often stretch outdoors and cramped space once they get inside. Erie County officials hope that is now a thing of the past with Tuesday's opening of a new HEAP and Emergency Services office.

With Erie County deep into the budget process for next year, county legislators voted Thursday to make some changes in the way it's asked to create new jobs.

After several years of talk about the death of Erie County Holding Center inmate India Cummings, local officials are hoping for definitive answers from a new investigation begun by New York State Attorney General Barbara Underwood.

As the lawsuit for the death of India Cummings enters the discovery phase, more details are expected to become public about what a state Commission of Correction report calls a "homicide due to medical neglect."

The Erie County Legislature voted 10-1 Thursday to appoint former Amherst Town Attorney E. Thomas Jones to the Erie County Water Authority board. Jones, a Republican, is the third Amherst attorney to be on the three-member board. Meanwhile, five lawmakers failed - by one vote - to fire ECWA Board Chairman Jerome Schad.

Erie County will soon have one-half mile less road in its 1,200-mile highway inventory and the Village of Williamsville will have an additional one-half mile of sharply improved highway.

For two-and-a-half years, the death of India Cummings has  raised questions. Cummings died after spending 17 days at the Erie County Holding Center. Thursday brought another protest outside the Holding Center, in the wake of a state report that said homicide should be listed as the woman's cause of death.

The state agency that investigates inmate deaths is out with scathing findings in the death of India Cummings, the 27-year-old Lackawanna woman who died in the custody of the Erie County Holding Center in February 2016.

Hazmat crews were called to the Niagara County Courthouse at 175 Hawley Street in Lockport Monday afternoon, after a white powdery substance was discovered on an envelope delivered by the U.S. mail.

The Erie County Legislature locked itself up Thursday in a round of recesses, legislative clarifications and proposed amendments of proposed amendments. It was over a U.S. Supreme Court decision limiting public employee union rights to collect dues from non-members.

Erie County legislators will be asked Thursday to make some budget transfers to cover costs from the Hepatitis A rush vaccinations in February. Covering the costs of staff and vaccines meant a county Health Department account is $74,000 over budget, with half a year to go.
