Things are moving fast for Bank on Buffalo. Less than two years ago they began as a start-up division of CNB Bank with a loan origination office. Today they announced their regional headquarters will be located at the Electric Tower in downtown Buffalo to accommodate their growing customer base.

Anytime there is a bank merger, there is worry about jobs and loss. However, KeyBank says it is keeping both its own charitable foundation and the First Niagara Foundation as separate entities.

One local state lawmaker says during a time when downtown Buffalo has enjoyed an economic renaissance, the announced forthcoming acquisition of First Niagara by KeyCorp could deal a devastating blow to the local economy.

Reacting to Friday morning's confirmation that KeyCorp is buying First Niagara, local leaders say they will work to preserve jobs that many fear will be lost as part of the deal.

A man who oversaw a five-year revamp of the Buffalo Public Schools' operations and finances is the new President and Chief Executive Officer at First Niagara Financial Group.

While most of the area workforce slipped into the sunshine of summer's first day, some First Niagara employees were listening carefully to a best-selling author celebrate their company's worker-friendly culture.

The object of their attention is best-selling author Chester Elton, who seems to have constant eye contact with every person in the room as he rushed through a series of topics, anecdotes and jokes, a smile fixed perpetually on his face.

The clock is ticking toward KeyBank expanding its footprint in the western region of New York. 

The Cleveland-based banker is poised to officially take over more than three-dozen HSBC branches in Buffalo and Rochester beginning the weekend of July 13. KeyBank will take over 26 HSBC branches in Buffalo and another 11 branches in Rochester. The changeover will be complete as of Monday, July 16. 

Report: Cuomo to nominate Koelmel to lead NYPA

The president and chief executive officer of First Niagara Financial Group, John Koelmel, is being nominated to become the chairman of the New York Power Authority.

The Buffalo News is reporting that Governor Andrew Cuomo will submit Koelmel’s name to the board of trustees Tuesday.

In addition to the Niagara Power Project, NYPA oversees about 1,400 miles of electric distribution lines and is investigating solar and wind energy as alternative power sources.
