Buffalo police officers and firefighters are returning to work after both departments were hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In Prince George's County, Md., every first responder carries naloxone, the drug that can reverse an opioid overdose.

"We carry it in our first-in bags," says Bryan Spies, the county's battalion chief in charge of emergency services. "So whenever we arrive at a patient's side, it's in the bag, along with things like glucose, aspirin and oxygen."

New York State Sen. Patrick Gallivan is among a trio of lawmakers introducing the Community Heroes Protection Act in New York. The act would designate crimes that specifically target police, firefighters and other emergency service workers punishable as hate crimes.

On a cold, windy and snowy night, around two dozen people were inside the Erie County Emergency Operations Center talking about giving life, using naloxone to overcome the fatal overdose effects of opioids. As fatalities have continued to rise, the number of people wanting to learn how to use the drug spray also has increased.

Emergency crews from across Western New York were called to respond to a plane sliding off the runway at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport during Saturday night’s rain storms. The good news – it was all part of a drill.


"Blue Mass" honors first responders

The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo held its first "Blue Mass" at 10:30 this morning at St. Joseph Cathedral. The special Mass honored first responders who live in the diocese, including fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services personnel.

FedEx donates plane to area first responders

Firefighters at the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport  and the region's first responders will soon have a new place to train, thanks to FedEx.  The world's largest express transportation company has donated one of its aircraft to the airport.
