A local food pantry got a helping hand from the Girl Scouts on Wednesday. About a dozen scouts and brownies helped pack groceries for distribution at the Response To Love Center on Kosciuszko St.

Food banks across upstate New York are receiving a timely gift of thousands of cans of soup to feed the hungry.

A new report from Ontario's main food bank organization says there has been a dramatic spike in first-time users of food banks. In its annual assessment, the Ontario Association of Food Banks also calls for the governments to provide more money for all social services.

Buffalo firefighters donate 1,500 lbs of turkeys

Through their union, the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association, city firefighters delivered 1,500 pounds of turkeys to five area agencies: The Response to Love Center in Buffalo, St. Louis Church, Valley Community Association, South Buffalo Food Pantry and the Food Bank of Western New York.  

Firefighter union vice president Tom Barrett says a portion of union dues goes into a fund from which the union makes charitable contributions.  For for the turkey drive, he says, firefighters then chip in even more money from their own pockets.
