Some of the Elmwood Village's most prominent development critics backed a Gates Circle project Wednesday, resulting in a Buffalo Zoning Board of Appeals approval.

The Park Lane restaurant is long gone, but its former location on Gates Circle is in line for new life. According to Jim Fink of Business First, Uniland Development plans to build townhouses at the site. The homes are expected to cost over $1 million.

One of Gates Circle’s newest neighbors on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo is pitching in to beautify the traffic circle. WBFO’s senior reporter Eileen Buckley says Canterbury Woods, along with residents contributed a $5,000 donation to the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy for the circle.

While the planned Green Code is supposed to do away with special zoning districts, City Hall is in the midst of starting a new one. This zoning district would be the site of the former Millard Fillmore Hospital on Gates Circle.

Now that the fight over the Canterbury Woods senior housing on Gates Circle appears to be resolved, the possibility of other fights revolve around other buildings on the former Millard Fillmore Hospital land.

Now that the former Millard Fillmore Gates Circle hospital is a pile of rubble, project planners are moving forward with plans for the first piece of redevelopment on the property. On Tuesday morning, members of the Buffalo Planning Board were shown a design for a proposed future Canterbury Woods senior housing building.

With the first blast coming just after seven this morning, the towering structure of the old Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital began to slide into itself and as the blast continued, the old structure imploded into a pile of debris.

Final preparations are underway for the implosion of a longtime Buffalo building that will soon give way to mixed use development in Gates Circle.

The city of Buffalo is putting measures in place to help drivers safely navigate Gates Circle. The action follows several direct crashes which have left the stonework around the circle heavily damaged.

Over the past few months, Gates Circle at the intersection of Delaware and Lafayette Avenues has seen three vehicle accidents. The result has been a flipped car, a critical injury, and the closing of the roundabout to clear wreckage. Buffalo’s Commissioner of Public Works, Steven Stepniak, said the city is aware of the problem and has already taken steps to correct it.
