October 11 marks the 31st anniversary of National Coming Out Day for members of the LGBTQ+ community. For the first time on the campus of D’Youville College on Buffalo’s West Side, faculty and students celebrated with an unveiling of a mural by the steps of its College Center building. The event dubbed "From the Closet to the Sidewalk" encourages inddividuals to come out of the closet in a environment which is safe and friendly.

Hockey can be a rough-and-tumble game and culture. Here in Western New York, though, it's proving to be a frontier for gay pride and acceptance. Alex Valvo, an on-ice official whose work includes NCAA Division I games, recently spoke with WBFO about his decision to reveal himself as a gay person.

It's an annual smorgasbord of events that  showcases the region's LGBT community, mixing celebration, advocacy  and community engagement. WNY Pride Week began Tuesday, a rite of spring that is expected to attract more than 30,000 people from all walks of life.
