Boy Scouts no longer, all-girl troops form in WNY

The Boys Scouts are no longer just a boys' organization, with the launch of the region's first all-girls troop in Niagara County and a few others across Western New York.

In a move that shakes up more than a century of tradition, the Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday that starting next year, it will welcome girls into some Scouting programs.

Boy Scouts Will Admit Transgender Boys

In a surprise announcement, the Boy Scouts of America said that it will begin accepting transgender boys who want to join its scouting programs.

The Scouts' policy change came in a written and video statement released by Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh. He said that for more than a hundred years the Scouts used the information on an individual's birth certificate to determine a boy's eligibility to join its single gender programs.

A local food pantry got a helping hand from the Girl Scouts on Wednesday. About a dozen scouts and brownies helped pack groceries for distribution at the Response To Love Center on Kosciuszko St.

The Girl Scouts of Western New York continues to guide and educate young women on leadership. In this Focus on Education report, WBFO's Eileen Buckley visited the Girl Scouts headquarters on Walden Avenue in Depew learning the organization serves 20,000 girls across the region.
